Saturnalia is thought by some to be the precursor to Christmas. Although gift giving was part of the festivities, the disruption of societal norms was a key feature of the holiday dedicated to the god Saturn. It was a time for the absurd; role reversal of the social hierarchy, free speech, lavish banquets, colorful clothing, and no holds gambling, things that were usually not allowed or frowned upon. In other words: wild partying.
